Making a movie versus a photo sounds more challenging, but in reality, it is not really complicated, you just need to follow some basic rules and everyone will be impressed!
This article will explain 5-easy steps on how I shot a maternity video, but this can apply to any video project you wish.

5 Tips on shooting a professional, cinematic maternity movie

1) Video Stabilization and Slow Motion

Shooting at double the frame rate of the final product will not only stabilize your video, but it will give a peaceful, cinematic look. Therefore, if your final video will be at 30fps, which my default, then shoot a 50/60fps.

Using a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, there is a button just for that and that’s my most important thing anytime I record a video. Of course, the sound will be slowed down, but usually, for this kind of video, you will replace the sound with beautiful music and won’t need the original audio.

2) Shooting against the sun at sunset

Cinematic Maternity Video sun reflection
Tip #2: Sun Reflection

I was always told to shoot videos with the sun behind my back, but not anymore. Shooting into the sun, preferably at sunset or sunrise, can lead to nice lighting effects and reflections with the subject between you and the sunFor a dramatic effect, try to leak the sun at the edge of the subject.

If your camera is capable of shooting raw, this can help you to adjust the video and luminosity in post-production. Raw videos can take several hundred megabytes per second, but this setting is recommended for this type of shot.

3) Color grading

log profile color grading
LOG profile color grading

Color grading is the process of altering and enhancing the color of a film. My camera is capable to shot in LOG mode, which creates a very low contrast and saturates footage. This method doesn’t blackout the shadow or burn the highlights, giving you more freedom to enhance and adjust the color in post-production, creating a unique color look throughout the scenes.

In the end, you may add an LUT to give even more a cinematic look. LUTs are color styles that can enhance skin tone or even resemble Hollywood movies look. For example, you can apply the look of the movie Matrix to your footage, if you are looking for a greenish artificial feeling, or a MadMax LUT if you are looking for a sandy post-nuclear feeling.

4) Soundtrack

The most important part of the video is the music. For this particular video, I looked for peaceful, calm music, which is easy to find (without copyright issues) on my Envato Element subscription. When you have selected the track, then sync the scene cuts with the music’s beat and it’s done!

5) Wide aspect ratio 2.39:1 ~ 2.4:1 (“two-four-oh”)

aspect ratio video

iPhone Anamorphic Lens
Click to buy iPhone Anamorphic Lens

Shooting with this aspect ratio will increase the cinematic look of your film. There are many aspect ratios, but the most used is the 2.39: 1 that many Hollywood movies use. Without going too much in detail, if you shoot in HD your resolution will be 1920×803. For 4K is 4096×1728.

You could do this format in-camera using a special anamorphic lens. But besides using an iPhone Anamorphic Lens, they can cost thousands of dollars, so this setting will probably be done in post-production, simply adjusting the video resolution.

And that’s it! Here is my recent maternity video

Tip how to predict a great sunset with Alpenglow

Great sunsets or sunrises are hard to predict, it depends on many factors including humidity, cloud coverage, prior rainfall, visibility, wind speed, and fog.

Here is, Alpenglow, a great iOS app that will predict based on your location if there will be a change for a spectacular sunset or sunrise.

Alpenglow iOS/Android App to predict a dramatic sunset/sunrise

Here is my new video experiment with my new BlackMagic 6K. The video is shot with the proprietary BlackMagiw Raw format. This format gives total control in post-production of the exposure settings and gives you also a tool to recover strong highlights.

Unfortunately, this sunset is not very dramatic because I shot before discovering the Alpenglow, so stay tuned for a new wonderful video!

I’m entering in the video making industry and I did a lot of researches on what will be my work camera. I have experience in making videos for youtube mostly using my iPhone X, my consumer Panasonic or my Insta360 camera for my drone-look-like video, but they don’t make that professional, television and cinematic look.

The main problem of consumer video cameras is the sensor size and the lens. iPhone is great and it can shoot at 4K, but the sensor is very tiny. Small sensor doesn’t make a great video in low light condition and most important the footage can’t achieve a really good shallow depth of field. In addition consumer camera may not expandable with a different lens and additional accessories.

10 things I looked choosing my new professional video camera

Video Sensor Sizes Comparison
Video Sensor Sizes Comparison
  1. Interchangeable Lens. Having a Canon 7D DSLR, I have several good lenses, so I wanted a camera with the ability to mount my lens. A good thing to know is the lens is often more important of the camera and something they can cost a lot of more than the camera itself. An, of course, having an interchangeable lens you can have all kinds of different looks.
  2. Big Sensor. As I’ve mentioned above having a big sensor and a fast lens (lenses that can achieve a large aperture) you can achieve the shallow depth of field which it’s impossible on most consumer cameras. On the market, there are different sensor sizes. The Canon 7D has an APS-C size, Blackmagic 6K use a super 35mm, Canon 5D has a full-frame size. They are all good to achieve shallow depth of field.
  3. Resolution. 4K TVs are becoming more and more affordable, so the logic thinking will be that the camera should record at least 4K too…. right? Well, yes, but the resolution is not everything. The Canon C100 Mark II costs $3,000 and doesn’t record at 4K, but the quality is amazing. It actually has a 4K sensor but the output footage is still 1080p. This makes the video so sharp that even up-scaling the footage to 4K resolution is still good quality. Another thing to consider when shooting at 4k, or more, is the video file size. 10 minutes at 4K can easily reach 64GB of data. For this reason, many of the high-end cameras allow recording directly to portable hard-drive. After consideration, I probably want to have a 4K camera for the future, but for now, I will still keep shooting a 1080p.
  4. Focusing Capability. While high-end videomaker typically uses manual focusing, having a good auto-focus can be good. Canon C100 camera has incredible focus with face tracking and continuous focus, while others have just one spot focusing. This all depends on the kind of recording needs to be done. A commercial ad is shot with manual focus while an interview with people walking need to have an auto-tracking focus.
  5. Slo-mo. Slo-Mo or Slow Motion is the ability of the camera to shoot at high-speed typically between 60 and 240fps, then when the footage is put back at 30fps the video runs at a slower speed. This effect is very common in all commercial ads, movie and professional footage.
  6. Microphone input. To make a quality interview you will need good audio. A great video with bad audio is no use, so you need to make sure the audio is recorded at the highest quality possible. For my microphone I looked also at XLS input that has high quality than regular 3.5mm jacks mics, so, for this reason, I bought the Rode NTG-2.
  7. Audio output. If you are going to record the audio using an external microphone on your camera you will need to monitor the audio to make sure it’s recorded well. You can record the audio also using an external recorder, but recording video and audio on the camera at the same time can speed up the post-production editing.
  8. Video out. While audio output is not indispensable, you should really need to consider an HDMI video output so you can watch the scene on an external video monitor. On-camera video monitor are usually small and they can be rotated.
  9. High Dynamic Range. Cheap cameras have only few points to measure and expose the scene, this can make the footage with over or under-exposed area. Professional cameras have more points to the problem. Black Magic Pocket Camera has 13 points, RED camera have even 15 points or more.
  10. Price. Professional cameras can be very expensive. RED or ALEXA cameras can easily start at $50,000$ or more (body only). Then the Cinema Lens can cost as much as the camera. However, there are more affordable cameras but still, have really good quality. One of them is Black Magic Pocket Camera or Canon C100 Mark II. They range between $1,200 and $3,000. But, besides the camera cost, you also need to check the price of accessories. Black Magic 6K camera uses same Canon battery, Canon lens and it records on cheap SD card. RED camera has its own accessories that cost a thousand dollars.

So, what did I choose?

I haven’t had my final decision yet, but I’m really impressed by the performance of new 6K Black Magic Pocket Camera, so I rented for a weekend so I was able to test it. You can check a video comparison below.

Here is a collection of my best drone footage in no-fly zones! New York Ground Zero, Monument Valley, Rome, Paris… But don’t worry, I didn’t break any laws because I shot all the videos using Google Earth!

That’s right, using Google Earth or Google Earth Pro you can have full color, 3D buildings and high resolution that can fool everyone and it’s much cheaper and easier than buying a drone and getting permission to shoot.

Stay tuned for the tutorial on MirkojaxUSA on how I created the video!

If you are not getting sharp images out your camera maybe you lens needs a calibration, especially if you have an old lens. It’s a technique that not many people know but, it’s a common practice for professional photographers.

Calibrate Canon Lens with Canon 7D with AF Microadjustments

In this video tutorial I will teach you how to calibrate your lens, however you will need to have a high-end camera like Canon 5D, 7D, 1D and few others. The trick doesn’t work on the consumer camera like Canon 400d.  In my video, I will do the calibration with my 300mm lens manufactured in 1996. After one year, it lost its sharpness using the camera built-in AF Microadjustments.

Here is what you will need to to calibrate you lens

YouTube can be a great tool also to improve the ranking on your business having back links to your website. However, if nobody can find your videos it won’t be any good. Here are my 10 basic tips on how to upload and optimize your youtube videos for more views and better ranking.

  1. Download this free extension by . This extension will give a lot of features that will help to improve your videos. (I will do a video tutorial soon so you can better understand the functionalities)
  2. When you upload the video make sure the name of the file has good keywords (ex. Jacksonville Florida Web Design Agency.mp4).
  3. Insert a video title with good keywords. It can be similar to the file name but also want to invite people to click on your video, so try to be creative but avoid creating click-baits. You have 100 characters of space but short title are more catchy.
  4. Insert a Long description summarizing what the video is about, you can also include your social links, your business website, your email,  you have 5000 characters. You can set a description default template in the Channel > Upload Default.
  5. Now you will need to insert tags.  The first tag should your channel name or business name, then try to create keyword phrases.  Very generic keywords like “design” or “jacksonville” won’t make your video to rank among millions of other restaurant videos. “Web Design Agency in Jacksonville“, “Designing Website in Jacksonville Florida” are more in line of what you’ll need.  you will suggest keywords to use and will let you see what tags your competitors use.
  6. Make sure to active the auto-share on twitter and Google+ and add a title in the share box. You will need to show manually on Facebook.
  7. Add the video in a playlist so you can combine similar videos together and make the audience engaged with more of your videos.
  8. When the video is uploaded and processed by YouTube, enter the End Screen items. Here, You can promote your website, subscription to your channel and other of your videos. Youtube let you to use only your personal or business website.
  9. Enter a some cards. Cards are links to show up during the video promoting your website or other videos.
  10. Enter a comment on the video page including a small description and action links to your website and pin the comment. Pining a comment will make to stay always at the top of the comment list.
  11. It’s optional and quite labor-intestive but adding a captions can improve your video because youtube can better understand all the dialog in the video. I usually skip this step, unless I create a video in a different language and I want to create a caption translations.
  12. Watch the analytics of the video on how it goes and be active with your audience responding to all comments, give hearts to the best comments. This will increase the engagement on your youtube channel and youtube will improve you ranking!

And that’s all the 12 Tips on how to optimize your youtube videos for more view and better ranking. Come to see my channel at Youtube Mirkojax.
